Pirate Bay admins have always claimed they never made much from the site, but Dutch records reveal that another massive BitTorrent search engine made more than €1 million in 2007. Are BitTorrent search engines profiting from piracy? Mininova's founder says no. By Last updated March 11, 2009 8:15 PM CT One of the key issues in the recent Pirate Bay trial was the prosecutor's contention that the lads behind the site were raking in something like 10 million kronor (one million dollars) a year. This led defendant Gottfried Svartholm Warg during a court recess: 'It's totally absurd, those numbers are totally disconnected from reality.' And, for good measure, he took a shot at the prosecutor.

'The old *******'s crazy,' he said. Whatever the truth of The Pirate Bay's profits, BitTorrent search engines can rake in quite a bit of cash. Mininova, for instance, earned €600,000 in revenue back in 2006, upping this to a whopping €1,000,000 in 2007. Is it profiting from piracy? Don't know the reason for it and maybe it's just me, but it seems if you do a search for Windows 7, it comes back with no relevant results any more, seems they are being forced to clean up their act.
Pirate Bay on the other hand still remains defiant. They are not profiting from piracy imo. Like the lads here say it's about selling t-shirts etc etc. The industries have only got themselves to blame for this because they refuse to update their business model with technology. They would prefer to keep it as a physical source like the cd/dvd so they can keep the monopoly they have on it.
I dont agree for one second that they are profiting from the bulletins they have on their boards. Do they sell copies of vista? Do they sell copies of gta iv? Maybe mirrors edge?

(I don't mean by that remark for you to do a lookup BTW). GOOGLE is one of the wealthiest corporations in the known (and probably unknown) universe and we certainly aren't charged to use its services. It makes money on 'per click' on sites visited by the searcher (or user). In any case what's the difference in searching say Windows 7 download on Google or on Mininova or the Pirate Bay or even 'The Yellow Pages'. If you prosecute The Pirate Bay you might just as well prosecute Google -- you can search for ANYTHING on google legal or otherwise if you phrase your question sufficiently intelligently.
This is all just a Lawyers fest and you know what I generally think of that totally (or at least 99%) scumbag profession. Cheers jimbo. There's information about this on rlslog.net. The owner of the ISOHunt search engine website (used specifically to find Bittorents submitted by users) is fighting the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) in court against claims that his site pirates music. The company’s president, Gary Fung, wants Canada’s Supreme Court to rule on the legality of search engines being used to identify material which may ultimately be used illegally to determine if they, too, are culpable Full story here. I thought the legal system was to punish the guilty -- when did it change to deciding you were guilty of a crime by just searching for info.
