No tools are required to remove the cover on the Jetta/Golf PD motor. You don't need to loosen the nut on the bracket near the firewall, either. You don't need to remove the oil dipstick as the grommet for that will slip past the cover with no problem. Gently pull up on the front sides of the cover. Mine was tight, so I just gently worked it upwards. It's a spike that sits in a rubber/neoprene grommet. Once the two front pegs are free, just gently lift the cover up A BIT, and pull towards you.

It will just slide out of the firewall bracket grommet. To make the next time easier, lube the rubber grommets with 303 or equivalent.
